Jews removed from iTunes gospel and Christian section

The iTunes online store has responded to criticisms that Jewish songs were being listed as "Christian and Gospel" by changing the categorisation of the music in question.

The change followed a Jerusalem Post report on Sunday which complained that Apple's music player did not have a genre for Jewish and Yiddish music.

Avraham Fried, an Orthodox Jew whose music had been listed as such said: "I would hate to think this is an attempt to bury Jewish music under a Christian or Gospel label."

This morning, however, the artists mentioned in the article, including the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and Chasidic singer-songwriter Mordechai Ben David, as well as Mr Fried, had albums listed variously as Religious, Vocal and World.

Rival programme Windows Media Player also does not have a Jewish music genre, but appears to have escaped criticism by not having a Christian category either.
